About

The icord tab cast on is usually used in top-down triangle-style shawls to create a seamless icord border along the top edge of the shawl.

There are multiple methods of starting and picking up stitches for an icord tab cast on. Two methods are outlined below.

Procedure

Method 1: Knit an icord and pick up stitches.

1. Cast on the number of stitches required for one side of the shawl border.

2. Knit one round, and then one round for each stitch that is required to be picked up for the shawl body. (For example: 3 stitches need to be picked up, knit 3 rounds.)

3. Rotate the knitting 90 degrees so that the left edge of the work is now on top.

4. Pick up and knit one stitch in each strand of yarn that connects the first and third stitches along the left edge.

5. Rotate the knitting 90 degrees so that the cast on edge of the work is now on top.

6. Pick up and knit the number of stitches required for one side of the shawl border (same as in Step 1). Rotate these stitches together so that the purl bumps are facing the front side of the work.

Method 2: Knit an icord, casting on stitches with increases as you go.

1. Cast on the number of stitches required for one side of the shawl border.

2. In the round, knit to one stitch before end of round, then work an increase. Work this round until you have the number of stitches required for the shawl body minus the shawl borders.

3. Work across the first half of the shawl border stitches and the shawl body stitches until you get to the cast on edge.

4. Rotate the knitting 90 degrees so that the cast on edge of the work is now on top.

5. Pick up and knit the number of stitches required for one side of the shawl border (same as in Step 1). Rotate these stitches together so that the purl bumps are facing the front side of the work.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use a provisional cast on to create a more seamless transition on the cast on edge. Depending on the provisional cast on, you may need to knit one extra row in Step 2 to get the required amount of garter ridges.
  • If using a traditional cast on, place a stitch marker through each cast on stitch, or a lifeline through the cast on row to aid in picking up stitches in Step 6.
