Cast On With A Knitting Needle & A Crochet Hook

  1. Create a slip knot and place it on the knitting needle. The slip knot does not count as a stitch.
  2. Cross the knitting needle over the crochet hook making an X with the knitting needle tip pointing to the right and the crochet hook tip pointing to the left. The working yarn should be under both the knitting needle and the crochet hook.
  3. Wrap the working yarn from the right side over the knitting needle and in between the knitting needle and crochet hook tips to the back of the work.
  4. Wrap the working yarn from the left side over the crochet hook and in between the knitting needle and crochet hook tips to the back of the work.
  5. Pull the loop on the crochet hook through the space between the first and second stitches closest to the tip of the left needle towards the front of the work.
  6. This resulted in a twisted stitch on the crochet hook which needs to be corrected. The right leg of the loop will be in front of the crochet hook. Pinch the base of the loop on the crochet hook and remove the crochet hook from the loop. Insert the crochet hook back into the loop so that the left leg of the loop is in front.
  7. Repeat steps 2-5.
  8. Bind off one stitch from the crochet hook by pulling the loop closest to the hook through the loop farthest from the hook over and off from the hook.
  9. Repeat step 6.
  10. Repeat steps 7-9 until the desired number of stitches minus one stitch are cast on, not counting the slip knot.
  11. Transfer the remaining loop on the crochet hook to the left needle as the final cast on stitch.
  12. At the end of the first row, drop the slip knot from the needle and undo it.
