The 3 over 1 over 3 left purl cross is a seven-stitch cable where there are two columns of three knit stitches and one column of one purl stitch. The outside two knit columns cross over the center purl column, and the right-most column crosses upwards and to the left.

Procedure

Western Method

With A Cable Needle

Helpful Hint: Some knitters prefer to use a locking stitch marker as a substitute for cable needle two.

  1. Slip three stitches purlwise to cable needle one.
  2. Hold cable needle one to the front of the work.
  3. Slip one stitch purlwise to cable needle two.
  4. Hold cable needle two to the back of the work.
  5. Knit three stitches on the left needle.
  6. Purl the one stitch on cable needle two (back of work).
  7. Knit the three stitches on cable needle one (front of work).
